Quiet and great place, only accessible on foot, church itself was closed, already nice from the outside

Schsfe
A quiet contemplative place zolle prospect. Unfortunately, the church's cross was torn from the roof during a storm and was not always repaired. Schsfe

Beautiful church in the small village of Carmine Superiore. On our hike from Cannero we were almost through the town without making a detour to the forecourt of the church. This forecourt is definitely worth a detour - from here you have a great view of part of the lake!

Absolutes Erlebnis.
Only on foot you reach the small built on a rock village. Carmine Supriore. Built around 975 as a fortress of a noble family from Cannobio. The church of San Gotthardo was built in 1331 in Romanesque style in two stages. Around 1500, the church was frescoed inside and outside by famous contemporary painters. Several representations show Mary with the God Child, the namesake San Gotthard (canonized emissary of the then Pope) and other sainted dignitaries. Around 1600, all the frescoes were covered with lime, because of the plague victims seeking protection at that time in Europe were many victims. Only from 1930, the frescoes were gradually exposed again. Some frescoes are still well preserved and absolutely worth seeing. From the church square you have a wonderful view over much of Lake Maggiore. At the bottom of the road there is an official car park, from where you either take the direct, steep path to the top, or you follow a trail that then leads from the west up into the village. Interesting is the trail through the forest, past small streams and old abandoned rusticos. A beautiful, magical nature and mountain landscape. Absolute experience.

This late Romanesque church is the real jewel of the township. A modern window allows you to peek inside when it's closed. It has a very particular two-storey structure due to the rocky basement on which it stands but, above all, it offers some frescoes from the 1300s and 1400s of the Lombard school (Carmine was owned by the Visconti). Outside you can admire an Adoration of the Magi and a San Gottardo, inside an Annunciation and a Crucifixion. There were also two triptychs now placed for safety in the San Vittore di Cannobio.
