Built in the 12th century, it underwent Gothic additions in the 13th-14th century and Baroque interventions in the 18th century. The facade is in Romanesque style.

Viene citata per la prima volta nelle cronache il 15 agosto 1172, quando i consoli di Alessandria vi giurarono fedeltà ai marchesi di Gavi. È stata rimaneggiata nel '600 e nel '700; ulteriori restauri furono condotti nel XX secolo. La chiesa è sovrastata da un tiburio che funge da campanile. L'impianto è di tipo basilicale a tre navate, con la centrale elevata sulle altre, ripartite internamente da colonne. All’interno restano capitelli con fogliami e figure zoomorfe (grifo, leone, lupo, sirena) di probabile mano del Magister Albertus. Un pregevole polittico di Gandolfino da Roreto (attivo in Piemonte tra il 1493 e il 1520) che raffigura la Madonna col Bambino tra san Giacomo e San Giovanni Battista, è collocato sulla parete sud. La facciata è ornata da una serie di archetti ciechi, ed è movimentata al centro da un imponente portale, sormontato da un rosone imperfetto e da una bifora. Nell’architrave e nella lunetta è rappresentata l’Ultima Cena con i 12 Apostoli seduti dietro due tavoli, sei per parte ai lati del Cristo assiso in trono; nella parte superiore è scolpita una colomba-Spirito Santo e due angeli in volo con una prospettiva insolita. Questa chiesa merita assolutamente una visita. Parish church, belonging to the Archdiocese of Genoa, built in Romanesque style with sandstone stones taken from a quarry near the fort. It is mentioned for the first time in the chronicles on 15 August 1172, when the consuls of Alexandria swore allegiance to the Marquises of Gavi. It was remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries; further restorations were conducted in the twentieth century. The church is dominated by a lantern which acts as a bell tower. The plant is a basilica with three naves, with the central elevated above the others, divided internally by columns. Inside there are capitals with foliage and zoomorphic figures (griffin, lion, wolf, mermaid) probably by the hand of the Magister Albertus. A valuable polyptych by Gandolfino da Roreto (active in Piedmont between 1493 and 1520) which depicts the Madonna and Child between St. James and St. John the Baptist, is located on the south wall. The façade is adorned with a series of blind arches, and is animated in the center by an imposing portal, surmounted by an imperfect rose window and a mullioned window. In the architrave and in the lunette the Last Supper is represented with the 12 Apostles sitting behind two tables, six on each side of the Christ seated on a throne; in the upper part there is a dove-Holy Spirit and two angels in flight with an unusual perspective. This church is absolutely worth a visit.

It is dedicated to San Giacomo and preserves the memory of the Via di Compostela along which it stood. The facade of the church is simple and linear. We were unable to enter because it was closed during our arrival.

The beautiful and ancient church of San Giacomo Maggiore is located in the historic center of Gavi (AL); there is no certain date for its construction, some documents confirm its existence already in 1172; and with three naves and the bell tower is octagonal; inside you can see some very beautiful frescoes and outside it has a small cloister in a panoramic position; important restorations were carried out in 1957.
