Il luogo di culto conserva al suo interno la miracolosa statua settecentesca della Madonna del Carmine. Annessi alla chiesa, ricadente nel territorio della parrocchia di San Nicola, vi sono un convento di frati dell'ordine carmelitano e la sede dell'omonima congrega. Tra il 31 ottobre 1894 ed il 16 novembre 1894 nell'omonima città: la statua della Madonna del Carmine si fece scorgere dai fedeli per 17 giorni con movimento degli occhi e con cambiamenti di colorazione del volto «...persone che sostenevano il simulacro della Madonna, portandolo in processione, sentirono le sbarre di legno che avevano tra le mani alzate da una forza invisibile per 1/2 palmo circa; in seguito le loro gambe dondolarono in modo da stentare a reggersi in piedi.» (Giuseppe Mercalli, Saggio sui terremoti della Calabria meridionale e del Messinese, 1897) The sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located in the historical center on the Piazza del Carmine.
