L	Luana Cristello on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Il Duomo di Civita Castellana fu costruito a partire dal 1185 su resti di un precedente edificio sacro. La realizzazione terminò con la costruzione del portico avvenuta nel 1210, come testimoniata dall'iscrizione sul fastigio centrale. Dalla piazza è visibile la facciata nelle forme tipicamente medievali. Internamente il presbiterio risulta rialzato rispetto al resto dell'aula in quanto al di sotto di esso giace la cripta caratterizzata da una particolare suddivisione dello spazio. Lungo le pareti laterali vi sono cappelle che ospitano altari decorati dedicati a figure di Santi. Magnifico il campanile, edificato assieme all'impianto medievale e successivamente modificato con l'aggiunta di due piani superiori. The Cathedral of Civita Castellana was built starting from 1185 on the remains of a previous sacred building. The construction ended with the construction of the portico in 1210, as evidenced by the inscription on the central pediment. From the square the facade in typically medieval forms is visible. Internally the presbytery is raised with respect to the rest of the hall as below it lies the crypt characterized by a particular subdivision of the space. Along the side walls there are chapels that house decorated altars dedicated to the figures of saints. The bell tower is magnificent, built together with the medieval structure and subsequently modified with the addition of two upper floors.

Fu edificata nel XII secolo in stile romanico dai Cosmati, famosi marmorari romani e venne ristrutturata, successivamente, nel XVIII secolo. Molto belli anche la pavimentazione e la scalinata dell'altare. Very beautiful church characterized by a wide staircase at the entrance. F	Free Experience on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Detta anche Duomo dei Cosmati. La Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore di Civita Castellana è un esempio di elegante archittetura romanica risalente al XII secolo. A quell’epoca appartiene la facciata anteriore in marmo. Delle decorazioni esterne in mosaico, blu e oro, rimangono solo alcuni frammenti. Anche la pavimentazione interna è realizzata con un classico mosaico cosmatesco. Successivamente la Chiesa viene ristrutturata e modificata con forme barocche; l'originaria struttura muta: le tre navate vengono sostituite con una grande centrale, affiancata da otto capelle laterali. È presente all'interno una targa dedicata al famoso compositore austriaco Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in ricordo di quando suonò l’organo durante un soggiorno a Civita Castellana, mentre tornava da Roma. L’altare maggiore poggia su un sarcofago romano ove sono rappresentati episodi biblici dell’antico e nuovo Testamento e contiene alcune scene della vita di Pietro. Anche la cripta ha un importante valore monumentale e forse fu costruita su una struttura romana. Scandita da 45 colonne con capitelli a fogliame, contiene due pregevoli cibori in marmo con lo stemma. Also known as the Duomo dei Cosmati. The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Civita Castellana is an example of elegant Romanesque architecture dating back to the 12th century. The marble front facade belongs to that period. Of the external decorations in mosaic, blue and gold, only a few fragments remain. The internal flooring is also made with a classic Cosmatesque mosaic. Subsequently the Church was restructured and modified with Baroque forms; the original structure changes: the three naves are replaced with a large central one, flanked by eight side chapels. Inside there is a plaque dedicated to the famous Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in memory of when he played the organ during a stay in Civita Castellana, on his way back from Rome. The main altar rests on a Roman sarcophagus where biblical episodes from the Old and New Testament are represented and contains some scenes from the life of Peter. The crypt also has an important monumental value and was perhaps built on a Roman structure. Scanned by 45 columns with foliage capitals, it contains two valuable marble cibori with the coat of arms.
G	Gemma Fortuni on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Cattedrale di Civitacastellana. Molto bello l'esterno con ampio porticato e portale d'ingresso decorato con marmi policromi cosmateschi. Completamente diverso l'interno, ristrutturato nei secoli successivi e attualmente in stile neoclassico/barocco. Rimane il bellissimo pavimento cosmatesco. Degne di rilievo la cappella ipogea e la cripta, che custodiscono belle opere medievali, ma che purtroppo non sono affatto evidenziate ed il cui ingresso è pressoché nascosto sul presbiterio. Civitacastellana Cathedral. The exterior is very beautiful with a large porch and entrance portal decorated with cosmatesque polychrome marbles. The interior is completely different, renovated in the following centuries and currently in a neoclassical / baroque style. The beautiful Cosmatesque floor remains. Worthy of note are the underground chapel and the crypt, which house beautiful medieval works, but which unfortunately are not highlighted at all and whose entrance is almost hidden on the presbytery.
