Bellissimo e fiabesco.
Beautiful and fairytale. To climb I made the Stilo Way of the Cross, practically a climb, to return the longer and easier route but almost 3 km with 275 meters of altitude. Go up with water and work out.

Ruins of an important Norman castle. Built, who knows how, on the crest of an overhanging mountain. The view that you can enjoy as soon as you arrive is also impressive. Not too long ago a funicular was planned for the ascent, of which today only track remains. The road to climb is passable, with great caution, with a high car capable of overcoming holes and stones. On foot it is a long climb and in some places even challenging. To be avoided in hot weather. Admission is free but it is all abandoned, full of weeds

From the Cattolica di Stilo, immediately after the car park, a path indicated by the word Castello parre in the pine forest. I recommend it to reach the Norman Castle. They will give a 200 meter difference in altitude, we went the same with the sandals and in 45 minutes you reach the Castle. The path is very steep and very sloping, it rises quickly and the view is spectacular from a fairytale you can see all the Gulf of Squillace and also towards Crotone. The Castle is truly in a dominant position with a 360 degree view also of Bivongi. There is a lot of the Castle left. It is worth the visit. The return we did it on the side, well marked arrives on the road that starts from the cemetery. I do not recommend it for low-profile cars or cars with low-tread tires. If there will be next time I will use trekking shoes or at least trainers. Last detail a non-working but apparently recent rack which represents the badly spent money in this area as well as the initial path which was once illuminated and adapted to Va Crucis but now everything is destroyed and not working. Too bad, it would have been a nighttime attraction that would have attracted tourists.

It's a fairly tough walk of about an hour from near La Cattolica to reach this castle. The castle is impressive and atmospheric, semi-ruined but with enough enclosed spaces still surviving to give an idea of how it would have been in its prime. The setting and view is spectacular and one can imagine how the fortress would have been an important strategic location. It seemed as though some attempt had been made to renovate the site to encourage visitors, but then abandoned. In places the were what looked like relatively new benches, platforms and fencing. but information boards were blank and unfinished, and the gates to the castle were secured by a piece of wire! There are no staff on site. The final stretch of the path was poorly maintained and felt a little dangerous in places. Well worth a visit, the lack of care does at least mean that you will not find the place overcrowded with other visitors.

If you are fit enough to climb to the top do so.. the view is magnificent. Make sure you stop for a cooling granita on the down

An other route leads up to the castle which starts not far from the La Cattolica. From here it's a nice, steep, moderate, 30-minute hike up to the castle which is now unfortunately neglected, and "owned" by the goats. If you reach the cross on your route you have to turn right towards the ruins. The view is really nice.
