★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La sua storia è legata a filo doppio a quella della famiglia Malaspina che, nel 1164, ottenne il feudo dei territori che vanno dalle colline di Rivanazzano fino a Oramala, direttamente dall’Imperatore Federico Barbarossa.
Il nucleo più antico del castello risale probabilmente alla seconda metà del XIII secolo. Dopo la divisione fra i Malaspina avvenuta nel 1275 - che sancì l’inizio del Marchesato di Varzi -, i marchesi del ramo dello Spino Secco decisero di costruire un nuovo borgo in posizione più elevata, in fianco alle abitazioni già esistenti.
Vi sono indizi che fanno pensare che le nuove costruzioni vennero edificate sul primo dei due ordini di mura, quello con camminamento di ronda, sopra al fossato, la cui realizzazione era stata messa per iscritto nel documento di divisione della famiglia.
Fu poi nel 1838, che la vita della famiglia Malaspina s’intrecciò a quella della famiglia Odetti, quando Marietta, l’ultima superstite dell’antico casato, sposò il conte Carlo Odetti di Marcorengo. I suoi discendenti sono ancora i proprietari del castello e dal 1983 hanno dato avvio a un coraggioso restauro conservativo che, trent’anni dopo, ha portato all’apertura al pubblico dei suoi spazi e all’organizzazione di eventi pubblici e privati.
Its history is closely linked to that of the Malaspina family who, in 1164, obtained the fiefdom of the territories ranging from the hills of Rivanazzano to Oramala, directly from the Emperor Federico Barbarossa.
The oldest part of the castle probably dates back to the second half of the 13th century. After the division between the Malaspina family in 1275 - which marked the beginning of the Marquisate of Varzi -, the marquises of the Spino Secco branch decided to build a new village in a higher position, next to the existing houses.
There are indications that the new buildings were built on the first of the two orders of walls, the one with a walkway, above the moat, the construction of which had been written down in the document of division of the family.
It was then in 1838, that the life of the Malaspina family intertwined with that of the Odetti family, when Marietta, the last survivor of the ancient family, married Count Carlo Odetti of Marcorengo. His descendants are still the owners of the castle and in 1983 they started a courageous conservative restoration which, thirty years later, led to the opening of its spaces to the public and the organization of public and private events.

Varzi is a town of 3,057 inhabitants in the province of Pavia, located in the beyond Po Pavese in a basin in the center of the Staffora valley, to the right of the homonymous stream, on the former state road 461 of the Penice pass.
