★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Immersi in un vasto aranceto nelle campagne di Corigliano Calabro, si trovano i ruderi del Castello di San Mauro.
Fu edificato nel 1515 ad opera di Bernardino Sanseverino, principe di Bisignano e conte di Corigliano, sui resti di un precendente monastero.
In questo castello nel novembre del 1535, Pietro Antonio Sanseverino ospitò Carlo V d’Asburgo, Re di Spagna e Imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero, reduce dalla vittoriosa campagna di Tunisi, con la quale aveva strappato la città all’Impero Ottomano.
Per l’occasione in una sola battuta di caccia furono abbattuti ben 45 cinghiali, poi serviti un ricevimento la cui sontuosità meravigliò a tal punto l’Imperatore da fargli esclamare, rivolto a Sanseverino :
“Voi siete il Re, o il Principe di Bisignano?"
Peccato sia in completo stato di abbandono e degrado.
Immersed in a vast orange grove in the countryside of Corigliano Calabro, are the ruins of the Castle of San Mauro.
It was built in 1515 by Bernardino Sanseverino, prince of Bisignano and count of Corigliano, on the remains of a previous monastery.
In this castle in November 1535, Pietro Antonio Sanseverino hosted Charles V of Habsburg, King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, returning from the victorious Tunis campaign, with which he had snatched the city from the Ottoman Empire.
For the occasion, 45 wild boars were killed in a single hunt, then served a reception whose sumptuousness so surprised the Emperor that he made him exclaim to Sanseverino:
"Are you the King, or the Prince of Bisignano?"
Too bad it is in a complete state of neglect and decay.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sehr altes Gemäuer. Interesant. Leider konnten wir wegen 2 Hunde den Eingang nicht passieren. Wir sind dann mit dem Auto drumherum gefahren.
Very old walls. Interesting. Unfortunately we could not pass the entrance because of 2 dogs. We then drove around with the car.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Castello splendido, o almeno, era e potrebbe ancora esserlo se fosse curato e se noi Coriglianesi valorizzassimo il nostro territorio. Che gran peccato, un castello più antico di quello di Corigliano Paese, che ha addirittura ospitato Federico II di Svevia e che ora ospita i polli. Sveglia!
