Il castello segnava il limite della città su quel lato e vi si apriva una porta cittadina. Il castello venne originariamente edificato dai pisani nel XIII secolo ed allora era chiamato "Cassero pisano", dalla solida mole quasi cubica. Venne ritoccato da Leonardo da Vinci quando si occupò del riordinamento delle difese cittadine. Con l'avvento delle armi da fuoco, venne dotato di bastioni stellari tra il 1552 e il 1557, sotto Cosimo I de' Medici che incaricò Giovanni Battista Belluzzi, e venne allora chiamato "Fortezza Medicea". Il castello è stato restaurato e fatto oggetto di scavi archeologici tra il 1999 e il 2001 su progetto dell'architetto Piero Ostilio Rossi. Oggi ospita il museo del castello e della città di Piombino, che ricostruisce la storia dell'edificio nel contesto delle vicende cittadine. Vi sono esposti alcuni degli oggetti del XIII secolo rinvenuti durante gli scavi: al pian terreno una serie di utensili come piatti, fibbie, brocche, lucerne, monete, placchette di armature, punte di freccia e proiettili di piombo; al secondo piano è illustrata la storia di Piombino durante la resistenza e nel XX secolo. The castle of Piombino is the main defensive military work that remains in the city, located on the south-east hill overlooking the sea. The castle marked the boundary of the city on that side and opened a city gate. The castle was originally built by the Pisans in the 13th century and was then called "Cassero Pisano", with a solid almost cubic size. It was retouched by Leonardo da Vinci when he took care of the reorganization of the city defenses. With the advent of firearms, it was equipped with star bastions between 1552 and 1557, under Cosimo I de 'Medici who commissioned Giovanni Battista Belluzzi, and was then called the "Medici Fortress". The castle was restored and made the subject of archaeological excavations between 1999 and 2001 on a project by the architect Piero Ostilio Rossi. Today it houses the museum of the castle and of the city of Piombino, which reconstructs the history of the building in the context of city events. Some of the 13th century objects found during the excavations are exhibited: on the ground floor a series of tools such as plates, buckles, jugs, oil lamps, coins, plates of armor, arrowheads and lead bullets; the second floor illustrates the history of Piombino during the resistance and in the twentieth century.

Er is een rondwandeling die wordt aangegeven met bordjes waarmee je langs alle bezienswaardigheden komt. De moeite van een ochten of middag waard! Piombino is a not too big coastal town, where the crossings to eg Elba depart, it has a car-free center. There is a circular walk that is indicated with signs that take you past all the sights. Worth a morning or afternoon!
