Fondato dalla famiglia Del Carretto, dominava il territorio tra le valli Belbo e Bormida, terre di passaggio tra i porti della Liguria e la pianura del Piemonte; prosperava sui proventi delle vie di comunicazione che percorrevano queste colline e sui commerci che le utilizzavano. Documentato a partire almeno dal 1190 fu ricostruito ed ampliato in numerose occasioni. Sono testimoniati lavori nel 1630 e nel 1731, ad opera del marchese Gian Giacomo Fontana, ministro di Carlo Emanuele III, che gli conferirono l’attuale aspetto. Nel 1952 fu acquisito dalla famiglia Ferrero di Alba, che ne fece una colonia estiva per i figli dei dipendenti della fabbrica dolciaria. In seguito fu acquistato da Guido Zerbetto, che ha ristrutturato l’intero edificio dotandolo di una collezione d’arte antica. The castle of Cravanzana stands on the top of the hill, in the center of the town, massive and secluded; it presents itself to the visitor surrounded by walls that still appear almost inaccessible today. Founded by the Del Carretto family, it dominated the territory between the Belbo and Bormida valleys, lands of passage between the ports of Liguria and the plain of Piedmont; it thrived on the proceeds of the communication routes that crossed these hills and on the businesses that used them. Documented starting at least from 1190 it was rebuilt and enlarged on numerous occasions. There is evidence of works in 1630 and 1731, by the Marquis Gian Giacomo Fontana, minister of Carlo Emanuele III, which gave it its current appearance. In 1952 it was acquired by the Ferrero family from Alba, who made it a summer camp for the children of the employees of the confectionery factory. It was later bought by Guido Zerbetto, who renovated the entire building by equipping it with a collection of ancient art.
