Tuttavia, la maggior parte della struttura originaria andò distrutta durante l'assedio operato da Alberto Sterz nella seconda metà del Trecento. Il possente edificio quadrilatero dominato dalla torre centrale che si presenta ai nostri occhi fu quasi integralmente ricostruito su ordine dei Caccia, nobile famiglia novarese che, per volere di Francesco Sforza, ottenne il feudo di Caltignaga nel 1449.
Nel corso di tre secoli (XV-XVII) i neo-feudatari rimaneggiarono più volte il palazzo, il quale col passare del tempo si trasformò gradualmente da roccaforte militare a residenza signorile: le tracce dell'antico fossato testimoniano la prima funzione, mentre l'ampio parco circostante è eredità della seconda.
Il castello è visibile solo dall'esterno, essendo tutt'ora proprietà privata.
The first news of the existence of a fortress in Caltignaga dates back to the 10th / 11th century. However, most of the original structure was destroyed during the siege operated by Alberto Sterz in the second half of the fourteenth century. The mighty four-sided building dominated by the central tower that appears before our eyes was almost completely rebuilt on the orders of the Caccia, a noble Novara family who, by order of Francesco Sforza, obtained the fief of Caltignaga in 1449.
Over the course of three centuries (XV-XVII) the new feudal lords reworked the palace several times, which over time gradually turned from a military stronghold to a noble residence: the traces of the ancient moat bear witness to the first function, while the large surrounding park is a legacy of the second.
The castle is visible only from the outside, being still private property.
