Worth the climb/drive. 13th century castle with outstanding frescos throughout rooms available to view. Small cafe inside, should you want to have a beer/glass of wine.

Interesting castle with many friezes and frescoes that have been carefully preserved. The tour takes you through the castle and there are informational cards explaining what you see. HOWEVER, about half of those explanations have not been translated to English and are only in Italian and German. There is an audioguide, but you have to download the Hearonymus app and then the specific guide (both are free). We had problems on multiple phones trying to download the guide and never managed to get it, so it would be best to plan ahead and download it before going. The walk up to the castle is a little steep, but is pretty short. And it's paved with river stones that are quite bumpy and a bit difficult to walk on. It was worth it, though.

We loved our visit. The information about the history of both the castle and the region is posted in English, Italian, and German. The art is beautiful and the views are amazing.

A superb experience, highly recommended. The interior spaces and the frescoes are quite unique, well-lit and easy to enjoy up close. The cafe is well worth a stop if only for the historic ambiance inside the stone walls. We took the riverside promenade (and a bit of the highway) on the way there and St. Oswaldo hillside walk on the way back to the city.

Lovely little fortress turned castle owned by a middle class merchant family, great exhibits on site around frescos and hunting. There's also a restaurant bat near the entrance. Highly recommended getaway from Bozen.

I visited in late March, so low season. Some facilities were closed but the museum and castle were accessible. 1,5h-2h is enough to get to the castle from parking and to visit.

Castle Runkelstein, a short bus ride away from Bozen, is quite unique in its compact setting and jovial atmosphere unlike most other castles. The 'secular' frescoes adorning its walls, unrelated to any religious or political subjects, instead display scenes from the courtly life of nobility in a surprisingly amusing and self-aware manner, while the 'summer house' is adorned with scenes from Arthurian and other Germanic legends. The whole exhibit takes around an hour to visit, and feels more like an amusing reflection upon the lives of the nobility rather than a museum, and is well worth a visit on a day trip to Bozen.
