★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This church is incredible old and precious. It is not part of the forum romanum and by that you to have to pay no entrance fee although it is a direct neighbour. If you are tired of all these tourists at the colosseum just enter paradise here...

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Above the Roman Forum about 40 meters high is the Palatine Hill the center-most of the seven hills in Rome. There it stood the Church of Santa Francesca Romana.
From its history and information, Saint Francesca Romana has been named the patron of car drivers, because of a legend that an angel used to light her way with a lamp when she traveled at night. Automobiles line up on the day of her feast 9th of March, as far as the Colosseum to partake of the blessing.
The interior, a single nave with side chapels, was rebuilt by Lombardi in the years preceding Francesca Buzzi's canonization, beginning in 1595.
The church houses the precious Our Lady of Tenderness, an early 5th-century icon brought from Santa Maria Antiqua. The twelfth-century Madonna and Child that had been painted over it was meticulously detached from the panel in 1950, and is now kept in the sacristy.
It can easily be spotted if one stands at the top of the Colosseum facing the Roman Forum.
