On all the books of architecture and even in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, this cemetery leaves me a little cold, perhaps I have not fully understood these endless walkways and the sense of emptiness that the complex emanates. I was struck by the red cube in the center, which should represent "the house without windows", now corrupted by time. Still worth a visit.

Il cimitero di Aldo Rossi a Modena. Molto interessante l'architettura. Una negazione della pesantezza della tomba che sprofonda nella terra, verso il basso, l'oscuritΓ , a favore di uno slancio leggero e luminoso verso l'alto. Catacombale al rovescio. Una cittΓ  da salire.
Aldo Rossi cemetery in Modena. The architecture is very interesting. A denial of the heaviness of the tomb that sinks into the earth, downwards, the darkness, in favor of a light and luminous momentum upwards. Reverse catacomb. A city to climb.

Notevole e suggestivo Γ¨ l’ossario, senza porte e finestre, lunghi camminamenti perimetrali. Comunque sia una struttura da visitare.
After friends photographers have praised the perfect architecture of the new Aldo Rossi cemetery, not without some perplexity I convinced myself to go. I have deep respect for the place and it was not easy for me to shoot. Remarkable and evocative is the ossuary, without doors and windows, long perimeter walkways. However it is a structure to visit.

Though the project hasn't been finished completely, it's still a place worth visiting. DO NOT follow Google Maps' direction and try to find the south entrance. There is only one entrance on the north side. It takes about 10 mins by bus (NO 9 toward Cittanova) from Modena train station to bus stop Emilia Ovest Madonnina. Take another 15 mins walk via Strada Nazionale per Carpi, turn right, and you will find the main (and only) entrance on Str. Cimitero S. Cataldo.

I didn't visit this place. I only watched an online architecture course - a lecturer spent 9 mins talking about this place passionately. At first, I thought who want to be buried in this place? This is just like a very ordinary ugly factory probably many workers spent most of their life in. People don't have choices because they have to make for living. But how on earth they choose to be buried in this spiritual prison? They already had enough unpleasant experience and depression during their life. For living people, how can they visit this place and memorize their ancestries with any good memories? Just emptiness and frightened, perhaps. The building without windows is not a special design or philosophy. It is just like a multi-story parking space you can find anywhere in the city. Or an unfinished office space with absolutely no attention to details but still with no fund to continue to be built. (I apologise my comments may hurt the people resting there and their families. I only want to comment on the architecture itself.)

Jewel of modern Architecture, one of the masterpieces of Aldo Rossi, atmospheric, original and elegant. Full of subtle details. A must see for archi-buffs.

Outstanding unfinished work by Aldo Rossi. You still can appreciate this peaceful and atmospheric location around a beautiful minimalist cube-shaped communal grave. Must for architecture enthusiasts/students (like my girlfriend who brought me here) that are visiting Modena.

I went there following the google route, it is really a great experience if you appreciate post modern architecture and love the work from Aldo Rossi. The spaces are both intimate and Monumental. Also go onto different floors of the cemetery and see the complex inside outside.
