La ferrovia ha un percorso molto strategico, perché passa in prossimità di molti comuni della provincia di Roma e di Viterbo, collegando le due città, ma purtroppo a causa dei vecchi sistemi di sicurezza, ha subito una pesante rimodulazione del servizio, con riduzione dei treni, molte sostituzioni con autobus, cancellazione delle corse dirette tra Roma e Viterbo. Oggi a causa di ciò, ci sono moltissimi soppressioni continue e ritardi anche sui treni programmati. Di contro, il paesaggio che di gode lungo il percorso è magnifico.
Per raggiungere Roma da Viterbo, è più utile prendere i treni in partenza dalla stazione di Viterbo Porta Fiorentina o Viterbo Porta Romana

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Non prendete qui il treno per andare a Roma, come minimo ci mettete tre ore. Spesso carrozze scadenti e con graffiti invadenti . Il treno comincia a viaggiare da Cesano in poi dove inizia il doppio binario, dove funge da metro a Roma.
