★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Villa Paola is a truly special place. We stayed here during the early days of June. The amenities of the hotel are fantastic and I believe the view from the terrace to be the best you can get on Tropea. However, what sets the place apart is the kindness of its staff.
The team around manager Andrea showed outstanding kindness and made you feel at home and taken care of at any point of time. The ladies at the reception, the cook and the head waiter all did an exceptional job and made the 3 days we stayed with them a magical experience. We will definitely come back and recommend the place! Thank you!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One classy place. 11 rooms with a maximum of 22 guests. An old 1700s monastery brought back to life. The grounds are spectacular as well as the views. The staff works very hard to make certain you are comfortable. Nice pool. Excellent food and extraordinary architecture. Will definitely come back.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Do not stay here! Especially if you do not speak the language. This hotel is the perfect example of “someone trying to be something they are not!” Do not be fooled by the glamorous Instagram photos because the reality does not even come close!!! Aside from the one female concierge, not one other staff member is accommodating towards English people. It is excuse after excuse and no one has time to help or assist you with anything. We were told we missed breakfast so we had to ask for specific items from the kitchen because they said they had nothing but coffee, and no chef. However, we asked if they had cereal and voila they have it. It’s the type of hotel where you’re always holding their hand in showing them how to serve you as opposed to them having it figured out. We literally saw the chef cooking on our way out after having cereal and espresso. For 1200 euro a night it shouldn’t be that much of an inconvenience to throw some eggs in a pan when we were the only guests around. I asked the gentlemen receptionist to make phone calls and he complained that nobody in tropea answers, however after trying myself a couple times I always got through. Not the experience of a 5 star hotel WHATSOEVER. My only compliment is the female receptionist truly tried her best and understood the concept of service.
We will never stay here again. We came down to Tropea to visit our family who lives an hour away (we would have stayed with them but for Covid reasons decided a hotel would be the safer and more respectful option as we are from Canada and Covid is not yet 100% resolved - worst mistake choosing Villa Paola) the entire experience at this hotel has truly put a damper on anything good that has happened during our time in Calabria. When someone cares about their job it is very evident and the staff here is either in a permanent daze or they simply DO NOT take their job seriously at all. AVOID this hotel and save your money. YOU are better off staying at an Airbnb because NO ONE here does anything to accommodate you. I asked for a night snack at 10
Pm after a long day at the beach and the receptionist was afraid to ask the kitchen. (His words not mine) so i said should we call in an hour when it’s not busy. He said yes that is perfect. Thankfully I inquired about the kitchen closing time which was 30 minutes. And then he ran to get us a small fruit plate. The images show a 5 star hotel experience but unfortunately we didn’t experience that at all. Possibly it’s the language barrier but it truly seems to be the mass unorganization of the hotel. The staff are afraid to ask each other for things for the guests however there is only 11 rooms? Very confusing. The first night I explained I didn’t have a lot of cash but we were starving we had to call around and get the prices for taxis ourself to make sure it fit into our budget which it very much so did. (10 euro flat rate anywhere in tropea by tuk tuk).we were told we can’t take taxis into town ( car ) however throughout our stay we took multiple taxis to and from town. It seems that the staff doesn’t have a good grip on how to run a concierge type service. You have to luckily run into employees if you need anything as their all floating around and not in a specific place. In conclusion if you want a 5 star experience and you’re used to staying at true 5 star hotels I would certainly look elsewhere. As we will be coming back to tropea to see our family but certainly venturing other accommodations next time. Thank you for reading and good luck to you if you decide to take the leap of faith. Not recommended.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Our stay was memorable, we enjoyed every single moment of it. From their staff Francesco, Rosalbino, Davide, and Mirko. They were so kind and always willing to help. One night I was sick during the dinner time and they went beyond their service to bring me something to eat. Every morning we were asked about our plans and got very great suggestions. We would not have enjoy Tropea if we were not to stay at Villa Paola. Gracias and hope we can visit you soon.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We stayed 7 days not 3 like many. The place is beautiful. The service is very bad. We are thinking that it was because we are Americans. The staff did reservations at the beaches for other people but not for us. I will go back to Tropea, it’s amazing, but not to this hotel. It’s a pity because the hotel is beautiful.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Everything at this hotel is 1st class. We are Americans and were treated with the utmost friendliness, courtesy and graciousness (just mentioning because of earlier noted comments). Everything, the grounds, the breakfast, the sheets, the pool; everything was perfect. The staff helped with all reservations and helped with travel logistics as well. Also booked a great boat trip. This hotel was the highlight to our 2 week trip to Italy. Highly recommend

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Excellent hotel with great views and great service!! The personnel is very attentive, food is great and the rooms are beautiful. We had a lovely stay, very relaxing. The hotel is a cloister, renovated with great taste. From there you can walk to the harbour and then to the city, crossing the orchards and countryside. Remember you are in Italy- not USA, not a large city- the food will be different, the timmings are different, no one is in a hurry- adjust your mindset to where you are and enjoy the beauty and peace of it.
