Great experience hiking to the top of Mount Vesuvius, to look in the crater. Spectacular panoramic views of Naples and Sorrento coasts.

The view was beautifull and it worth the walk, but the thing I did not understand was three workers standing in line with 2m apart and they all had to check my ticket and the fourth scaned it??? 0.o

You want to see an active volcano, a mountain seeped in folklore, a volcano which destroyed a whole city and is predicted to erupt again in future. You are at the right place, Mt. Vesuvius! Easiest way via public transport is to get to Pompeii Scavi and then take the bus right from the front of the station to almost top of the mountain. From the bus stop you need to walk almost 1 km to see the crater and fumes (quite less) coming out of the crater. It is kind of scary to imagine that it will explode again one day. The views of the Naples bay from the top are gorgeous!

Wonderful experience to hike to the crater of the Vesuvius. You get amazing view at Naples area and a good look into the crater. It is steep but not very long, but the snow made it a bit difficult and slippery now and then. The round trip (sentiero) around the crater was closed halfway and they sometimes close all of the area when weather is bad. We travelled with the bus from Pompeii. You need to buy ticket online. We didn't manage to do so, because the payment could not be verified, so we booked tickets at Pompeii station. They add 5 euro's to the price though. At the top (parking place and crater) there is bad reception for you phone, so don't expect it to work, although it did some times. All the shops prefer cash, but if you insist they accept your card. People in the shop at the top of the crater are friendly.

Must see if you are in the area. Important is to remember to buy parking tickets and tickets to the summit, all online. From the parking you can take a taxi closer to the summit for just 2euro, remember cash, after that it is a 1k hike to the summit.

The crater itself was quite fascinating however the venue is not what you'd expect from a hiking adventure trail. There is a constant swarm of buses bringing in a large number of tourists, shops selling souvenirs on every corner and it ended up being exhausting and not worth the half a day spent to wait in lines for the bus and get up there. Considering the area is designed to handle large crowds there are very poor amenities. The nearest toilet is in a small cafe at the bottom of the mountain that you can only use if you buy something and it was not in working order. A very disappointing experience overall. Also we asked about hiking some of the other trails at Vesuvius National park and were told there would be guides up there to take us (as we would lose ourselves if we went on our own). The lady providing information at the base of the mountain had no idea about these trails and said some of them have been closed for years.

There is no online booking ticket for bus or whatsoever so you need to go to one of the tourist booth to buy the tour bus tickets. They are a little bit expensive but you can be sure about your journey. Once you make it to the national park it really worths it. What I don’t know is this volcano mountain is still active. You can see the smoke coming out the mountain. The view is absolutely fantastic.

Such a wonderful unique place! you can get there by bus from Napoli/Pompeii, if you come with the car not in season you can park free, no body asks, from the parking up to the park about 40 minutes walking, or you can get a bus for 2 Euros (Cash only). The park itself is very steep, going from about 600m altitude to over 1100. very stunning views and there's some souvenir shops inside.. well worth it but take care of walking
