Le due statue, come la chiesa e il municipio, si guardano di sbieco, quasi a volersi nascondere, proprio come il legame di odio e amicizia dei due personaggi. La statua è accessibile a tutti per una foto ricordo. Il sindaco comunista Giuseppe Bottazzi è raffigurato mentre sembra voler salutare il suo grande antagonista, Don Camillo. La statua anni fa ha subito un crollo, pare a causa dei tanti turisti che vi si appoggiavano per fare una foto ricordo, ma Peppone, grazie a un'opera di restauro è stato rimesso in piedi. Giuseppe Bottazzi, detto Peppone, è il protagonista dei romanzi di Giovanni Guareschi. Personaggio immaginario, Peppone è il sindaco comunista e capo del partito del popolo, di in piccolo paese in provincia di Reggio Emilia: Brescello. Inevitabili i suoi scontri con l'amico-nemico parroco Don Camillo fin dai tempi della guerra partigiana. Questi divertenti episodi, nati dalla penna di Guareschi, sono stati trasformati in cinque bellissimi films in cui Peppone è interpretato da Gino Cervi e Don Camillo da Fernandel.
