Nel 1935 l’autore si trasferisce a Caltanissetta con la famiglia e si iscrive all’Istituto Magistrale IX Maggio, nel quale insegna Vitaliano Brancati. Lo scrittore diventerà per Sciascia un modello, mentre all’incontro con il giovane insegnante Giuseppe Granata (futuro senatore del PCI) Sciascia riconosce la scoperta degli illuministi e della letteratura americana.
