Trieste fu la prima città a ricordare degnamente Giuseppe Verdi dopo la sua morte, sia per lo stretto rapporto che Verdi aveva avuto con la città (qui avvevve la prima assoluta dell’ opera “Il Corsaro” ), sia per il significato irredentistico di alcune sue note. Originariamente in pietra, la statua fu rifatta nel 1920 perché aveva subito dei gravi danneggiamenti provocati dai Triestini filo austrici per rappresaglia contro la dichiarazione di guerra dell'Italia il 24 maggio 1915 all'Austria nella Prima Guerra Mondiale. La nuova statua bronzea, sempre dello stesso autore, documentata anche da un suo schizzo, fu creata con la fusione di cannoni austriaci preda bellica. Mi è sempre parso ironico che la statua non sia in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, dove c’è invece il teatro omonimo ma ovviamente non vi è nulla di strano in tutto ciò, semplicemente a volte si confonde il nome delle piazze che anche in Google Maps era sbagliato.
