La collina dove si trova il sito raggiunge i 1075 metri di altitudine, è caratterizzata da pendii scoscesi a nord, in direzione della piana del Vulture, e a ovest, dove si gode della vista di Lagopesole, e più dolci sui versanti est e sud, verso Potenza, dove si riconosce a sud-est il profilo dell’altipiano dell’insediamento di Serra di Vaglio. A sud-est, dopo il picco, un breve pendio e di nuovo una cresta, nota come Monte Solario, o Salario, nel fianco del quale ancora è possibile scorgere un avvallamento che fino agli inizi del secolo scorso raccoglieva le acque di un lago oggi prosciugato. Nel 1956, dunque, Ranaldi realizzò, su segnalazione di abitanti del posto, il primo scavo sul sito dove era risaputo affiorassero resti di mura: si concentrò dapprima sul circuito murario superiore, scavò lungo il muro per una lunghezza di 98 metri, mettendo a nudo la fortificazione in tutta la sua altezza di 1.92 metri nei punti meglio conservati.
