Al centro della venerazione c'è un miracoloso crocifisso quattrocentesco che la tradizione popolare vuole scolpito da un angelo, tanta è la sua bellezza e che alcuni critici attribuiscono invece a Donatello oppure a Michelangelo. Affiancato al santuario sorge il convento dei Padri Francescani, della fine del 1600. Ad agosto 2017 Il santuario era chiuso per restauri. Monumental church built in several stages in the first half of the 1900s after a furious fire destroyed the ancient proto-Christian parish founded already in the third century on the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to Isis. At the center of the veneration there is a miraculous fifteenth-century crucifix that popular tradition has it carved by an angel, so much is its beauty and that some critics attribute instead to Donatello or Michelangelo. Next to the sanctuary stands the convent of the Franciscan Fathers of the late 1600s. In August 2017 the sanctuary was closed for renovations.

L’origine della chiesa non è nota, ma risale certo ad epoca remotissima. I documenti più antichi sono del XIII secolo e sono conservati negli archivi dell’Accademia Georgica. Nel terzo o quarto secolo Treia ha avuto la sua prima chiesa cristiana. Gli scavi archeologici praticati nel XVIII secolo per interessamento di Fortunato Benigni e, negli anni 1985-88, dall’Istituto di Archeologia dell’Università di Macerata, hanno confermato la plurisecolare tradizione che il primo tempio cristiano, chiamato Pieve, è sorto trasformando un tempio pagano. The Sanctuary of the Santissimo Crocifisso rises harmoniously and solemnly about one kilometer from Treia, among the green countryside, along the provincial road to San Lorenzo. The origin of the church is not known, but it certainly dates back to very remote times. The oldest documents are from the 13th century and are kept in the archives of the Georgian Academy. In the third or fourth century Treia had its first Christian church. The archaeological excavations carried out in the eighteenth century for the interest of Fortunato Benigni and, in the years 1985-88, by the Institute of Archeology of the University of Macerata, confirmed the centuries-old tradition that the first Christian temple, called Pieve, was built by transforming a temple they pay.
