Successivamente la chiesa viene citata anche in una bolla di papa Gregorio IX del 1227 e in una lettera di Alessandro IV del 1258. La bolla suppone la presenza della comunità monastica cistercense. La data di inizio dello stanziamento cistercense è quindi certamente anteriore al 1227. Nel 1432 l’abbazia fu quasi completamente distrutta durante una guerra locale e i monaci si trasferirono all’abbazia di San Benedetto di Portonorio. Nel 1812 la chiesa di Santa Maria di Mirteto era ancora in buono stato di conservazione, poiché era l'Oratorio privato della famiglia Ricci. Attualmente la chiesa e il monastero sono in stato di abbandono, dopo che le ultime famiglie che abitavano nei dintorni si sono trasferite[2]. Malgrado sia stato abbandonato da lungo tempo, il complesso mantiene ancora l'assetto medioevale, e oltre alla chiesa restano consistenti avanzi degli annessi monastici, delle rustiche abitazioni, dei granai e del frantoio. La scarpinata per arrivarci attraverso il sentiero nel bosco non è per tutti e richiede circa 1 ora (45 minuti senza fermarsi) se non si è allenati. Peccato per lo stato di abbandono in cui versa e la pericolosità delle strutture crollate. Beautiful ancient village now abandoned. So beautiful and isolated that it seems enchanted. The trek to get there via the forest path is not for everyone and takes about 1 hour (45 minutes without stopping) if you are not trained. Too bad for the state of neglect in which it finds itself and the danger of the collapsed structures.
N	Nicola Bertocchini on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Un piccolissimo paese ormai abbandonato sul versante dei monti pisani rivolto verso Pisa. Lasciata la macchina si segue il sentiero nel bosco. Il sentiero è abbastanza ripido è parecchio dissestato. Io e la mia ragazza siamo andati col cane, ma non è stata una grande idea. Comunque dopo circa 40 minuti siamo arrivati al paesino, molto suggestivo con la chiesetta diroccata assolutamente affascinante. A very small town now abandoned on the side of the Pisan mountains facing Pisa. Leave the car and follow the path in the woods. The path is quite steep and quite rough. Me and my girlfriend went with the dog, but it was not a great idea. However, after about 40 minutes we arrived at the village, very charming with church ruins absolutely fascinating.

Da qui poi è inoltre possibile raggiungere il monte faeta tramite il percorso 121 del CAI. Very quiet place perfect for a picnic. Too bad for the structure which is a bit run down. From here it is also possible to reach Mount Faeta via the CAI route 121.

L	Luigi Serra on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Packed up some food, conscripted some friends and hiked up there on a spring morning. Found a lovely ruined village inhabited by Mr. and Ms. Goat and their goatlings. There was a freshwater fountain, a comfortable meadow, and an old defrocked roofless chapel complete with cracked altar for the desecration inclined people. We, being somewhat sensible and aware of it being the Easter day, opted for a picnic in the surrounding grove. In the meadows, the Goat family happily rummaged through the bags of less goat-aware persons, stealing food and causing a humorous mess, culminating in Mr. Goat finding an hipster's tobacco pouch and defiantly eating it under the menace of headbutting anyone who tried to recover it. Good times
S	Sarah Emmanuella on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I think it's good for those who's looking for short trekking with some friends only 1-2 hours. There are some flat area for eating. The last quarter path to the top of the mountain is very steep and beware of wild goats. The church is pretty much abandoned, but you can see the history why is the window only in one side, and there is also an old house that's being restored now.
