Si narra che intorno al 570 a.c. un gruppo di frati Basiliani ( devoti a San Basilio ) partirono da Mascali, incaricati da Papa Gregorio I si recano nei possedimenti di Santa Silvia ( madre del Papa ) per eregere un Santuario alla Madonna. I frati , non sapevano precisamente dove fossero questi possedimenti, poiché il luogo era disabitato, si misero in groppa ai cavalli e iniziarono il loro viaggio e i vari averi furono caricati su vari muli. Ma su di un mulo, misero solo un quadro della Madonna per evitare che si rovinasse. Dopo diverso camminare, ad un tratto il solo mulo con in groppa il quadro della Madonna si fermo e inizio a calciare con tutta la sua forza il terreno e tutto ad un tratto, da qual punto, dove il mulo scalciava fece sgorgare un rivolo o "Vena d'acqua" e proprio in quel punto i frati decisero che avrebbero eretto il santuario. Successivamente, affascinati da questo "volere divino" i frati nel 579 a.c. costruirono un monastero di frati Basiliani dedicato a Sant Andrea. There is a place in Sicily, in the province of Catania, unknown to most, this place, a small hamlet of Piedimonte Etneo is called Vena.
