Si chiama così per via di una vecchia leggenda popolare:si racconta che un pastore,inseguito dalle guardie, riuscì a sfuggire alla cattura in modo rocambolesco.
Attraversò il fiume spiccando un poderoso salto da una sponda all'altra della gola e gli inseguitori non ebbero il coraggio di emularlo.
 The Salto del Pecoraio is the point where the Simeto river flows in a narrow and deep gorge.
It is so called because of an old popular legend: it is said that a shepherd, chased by the guards, managed to escape capture in a daring way.
He crossed the river with a powerful leap from one side of the gorge to the other and the pursuers did not have the courage to emulate it.
