The church stands on the site where the temple of Apollo was located in Alba Fucens. At first an early Christian church replaced the temple, but the first forms that reflect the current ones are to be found in the early 12th century. The remains of the temple were used as foundations for the church, but the main layout was extended, so it was divided into 3 naves. The four original columns were recovered by the carabinieri. The Avezzano earthquake, which struck the Marsica in 1915, destroyed the church which, however, was rebuilt in the 1950s through an almost complete anastylosis led by Raffaello Delogu who aimed to recover the Romanesque architecture saving only a few of the integrations and additions made between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: the intervention conceived and carried out by Delogu constitutes an exemplary case of restoration, for shrewdness and wisdom, which Cesare Brandi defined at the time as "by far the best that has ever been conducted in Italy ".

Beautiful historical religious jewel in Alba, located on the hill above Albe, the church was built in the 9th century above the acropolis where the temple of Apollo stood, with pre-existing materials and taken from the remains of the ancient city, later enlarged by the monks of San Clemente a Casauria, in the XII century it was enlarged with the creation of three naves; Destroyed by the 1915 earthquake and then rebuilt in the 1960s by anastylosis; The church has the columns of the original temple and an ambo with Roman Eagle iconostasis.

Medieval church on the hill of Alba Fucens, unfortunately it was closed and I was able to see only the outside, imposing and preserved architecture.
Beautiful view back to the church and with a short path on the right front that takes you directly to the Roman amphitheater of Alba Fucens.

Church of San Pietro in Alba Fucins
This extraordinary 11th century Romanesque basilica was built at an altitude of 1000 m with a magnificent panoramic view. Built directly on the substructures of the ancient temple of Apollo from the 3rd century BC. Corinthian columns divide the space of the basilica into three naves, a rare case for Abruzzo, mostly single-nave churches. The iconostasis, restored by the Kosmati brothers, separates the presbytery as in Orthodox churches. There is also an underground crypt, but the entrance is closed.
The church was founded in the 6th century, became the center of the Benedictine abbey, and then passed to the Franciscans. Ruins have survived from the monastery, since the area here is seismically dangerous, periodically there are earthquakes. The last catastrophic 11 point happened in 1915, practically razing the monastery to the ground. The church was restored, frescoes from the 12th-15th centuries and wooden doors from the 11th century are now on display in the Celano castle (Castello Piccolomini - Torlonia).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Chiesa splendida

Splendid church
The three naves are interspersed with Corinthian columns of the pre-existing temple of Apollo, of which the church faithfully follows the plan.
The vault supported by wooden trusses was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1915, while the pulpit and the barriers that delimit the presbytery, both in white marble with inlays in colored stones in the typical Cosmatesque style, have miraculously survived.
