★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore di Pianella (Pe) viene citata per la prima volta in documenti del 1100.
Nella struttura della facciata, in cotto, spiccano i classici elementi in pietra dell’architettura abruzzese protoromanica (il portale ed il rosone) di pregevolissima fattura.
All’interno, suddiviso in tre navate, spicca l’ambone in pietra, attribuito, almeno in parte, al Maestro Acuto. Si differenzia da altri amboni, presenti in altre Chiese romaniche abruzzesi, per essere dotato e sorreggersi su solo due colonne, essendo addossato alla parete. Su due lati sono scolpiti i simboli degli Evangelisti: l’aquila, il toro, l’angelo ed il leone.
Al termine dell’abside centrale, al di sopra dell’altare spicca un affresco databile attorno al 1100, raffigurante il “Giudizio finale”. Altri affreschi, di datazione successiva, sono presenti anche sui pilastri delle navate. Purtroppo la maggior parte di questi affreschi risulta abbastanza danneggiato.
La Chiesa, forse a causa dell’emergenza covid (ottobre 2020), risulta chiusa tutti i giorni della settimana, tranne la domenica negli orari della Messa. E’ però presente un cartello con un numero telefonico cui rivolgersi per visitare questo edificio Sacro. Risponde una cortese e gentile signora che si è dimostrata molto disponibile ad aprirmi e consentirmi la visita.
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Pianella (Pe) is mentioned for the first time in documents from 1100.
In the structure of the façade, in terracotta, the classic stone elements of the Abruzzese proto-Romanesque architecture (the portal and the rose window) stand out.
Inside, divided into three naves, the stone ambo stands out, attributed, at least in part, to Maestro Acuto. It differs from other amboos, present in other Abruzzo Romanesque churches, for being equipped and supported on only two columns, being leaning against the wall. The symbols of the Evangelists are carved on two sides: the eagle, the bull, the angel and the lion.
At the end of the central apse, above the altar stands a fresco dating back to around 1100, depicting the "Final Judgment". Other frescoes, of later dating, are also present on the pillars of the naves. Unfortunately most of these frescoes are quite damaged.
The Church, perhaps due to the Covid emergency (October 2020), is closed every day of the week, except Sunday during Mass hours. However, there is a sign with a telephone number to contact to visit this sacred building. A courteous and kind lady responds who has proved very willing to open up and allow me to visit.
