La costruzione ha una pianta quadrangolare e poggia direttamente sulla roccia naturale adattandosi alla conformazione del terreno. La documentazione sulla rocca inizia nel XIV secolo: nel 1387 Pietruccio Camporeali forniva armi e uomini per l approvviggionamento della rocca. All inizio del XVI secolo il fortilizio aveva perso la sua funzione diventando asilo per fuoriusciti. The fortress of San Giovanni di Piedimonte dates back to 1200-1300, the name derives from the church below. The building has a quadrangular plan and rests directly on the natural rock, adapting to the conformation of the land. The documentation on the fortress begins in the fourteenth century: in 1387 Pietruccio Camporeali supplied weapons and men for the supply of the fortress. At the beginning of the 16th century the fort had lost its function and became asylum for exiles.
