It is one of the monumental buildings of medieval power, which form the starry setting of Piazza Grande. Built in 1293, in the Gothic style like the adjacent palaces: of the Captain of the people and of the People, it was enlarged, compared to the original project, in the first half of the 1300s. On the left side of the façade, there is a bronze eagle that contains a tablecloth, symbol of the city *, by Giovanni Gigliaccio 1339.In the second half of the 14th century, an imposing trapezoidal tower was erected on the left of the building. In the early 1500s, it underwent another change with the construction of two orders of round windows. The building was an office and civil residence of the three Priors, especially administrators, who, once elected, remained in office for 6 months. For the entire term of office, they could leave the building only for the ceremonies or the official assemblies, at the end of the mandate, they could not be re-elected. In modern times the building became the seat of the court, until 2016, when the Todi magistrate's court was abolished, whose district was annexed to the court of Spoleto. * Legend has it that the first inhabitants of Todi, headed by Tudero, were building the foundations of the city, on the right bank of the Tiber; when, during a lunch break, an eagle, symbol of the god Mars, plunged from the sky, germinating the tablecloth, on which the provisions were distributed, rose again in flight and deposited it on the top of the hill above. that fact as a warning from the god that it was safer to build the new city high up on the hill and not downstream. Thus it was, and still today, the eagle that sprouts the tablecloth is the symbol of Todi.
