Probably the oldest gate in Ravenna, before the year one thousand; after having suffered serious damage as a result of a battle, it was restored until the final arrangement dating back to 1613, when Domenico Rivarola was cardinal legate. It owes its name to the nearby monastery of San Mamante which was demolished in the sixteenth century
