★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I am translating a Jewish intinerary of the area, and thought this would be interesting to read while sipping your coffee: "There are not only the personal memories of the refugees to remind us of a post-war Jewish presence in Santa Cesarea. There are inscriptions in Hebrew on the walls of coffee bar on the main street overlooking the sea. The bar, “Porta d’Oriente” would have been part of the Displaced Persons camp at the time. Translated, the inscription read: “Union of Israeli workers”, “For migration, work and defense” and “Refectory”. We can imagine that these relate to the offices in the building itself. Given the café’s previous existence it is no coincidence that it is now called “Porta d'Oriente” or” Doorway to the East”. The inscriptions have actually been repainted with the odd typo, but nevertheless represent the firm intention of the locals to preserve the memory of their Jewish guests." For more info go to the Medieval Jewish museum in Lecce.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Ham Pizza reminded me of my youth, as does the interior. Tasty housewine, almond sweets afterwards, decent prices and a tale for history buffs, this makes a great place.
