Chiesa edificata su un'antica chiesa medievale di cui si possono vedere le vestigia di un'antica colonna a destra del portale centrale. Grazie all'attuale parroco è stata riportata ai colori originali e la Chiesa ha riavuto due antiche opere pittoriche che con motivazioni diverse erano state asportate dalle dotazioni ricevute per elargizioni di parrocchiani. Bisogna ricordare che al primo altare della navata sx si può adorare un Cricifisso antico il cui legno proviene da un altare della Chiesa dell'antica Luni distrutta nel 800 d.c. dai Vichinghi che avevano scambiato l'antica città portuale, che risplenderva dei marmi estratti dalle cave apuane, per Roma. La croce era stata portata a Lavenza, allora sotto il Vescovo di Luni, per preservarla dalla distruzione dei barbari adoratori di Odino, solo successivamente dopo circa 5 secoli le era stata aggiunta la statua del Cristo crocifisso con la particolarità di avere una capigliatura umana, ancora oggi perfettamente conservata; la popolazione tramanda la credenza che il Gesù Crocifisso sia miracoloso. La costruzione risale al medioevo ed era messa trasversalmente cioè con l'ingresso rivolto verso i monti come dimostra lo stipite della porta rinvenuto nel Pilastro dell'orchestra tuttora visibile. La colonna di pietra che oggi è incuneata in un pilastro interno della facciata,secondo i tecnici della sovrintendenza appartiene ad una struttura più antica forse del sesto settimo secolo. Sul muro sopra l'ingresso si notano due colonnine provenienti dallo smembramento di un altare seicentesco e la cimosa riciclata dall'antica facciata. Il Campanile di costruzione successiva alla chiesa e completato in fasi diverse,presenta la cupola coperta con ardesie di Lavagna conservatosi fino ai lavori del 1963 durante i quali furono sostituite con un manto di catrame.Durante il restauro del 1991 la cupola è stata riportata all'antico splendore. Da notare infine i fori per la diffusione della sonorità occlusi nei rifacimenti del 1932. The church as we see today in its complete structure is half of the 800's.
