Oltre ai palazzi e alle chiese bisogna guardare anche l’orologio sul palazzo del Banco di Napoli a Lecce. L’ideale sarebbe usare un binocolo se si vogliono apprezzare tutte le figure e i simbolismi che contiene, oppure fotografarlo e guardare con calma le foto ingrandite. TO LOOK CAREFULLY Someone has rightly said that Lecce is to be visited always looking up. In addition to the palaces and churches, you must also look at the clock on the Banco di Napoli building in Lecce. È costituito inferiormente da un occhio ciclopico in cui l'iride rappresenta il quadrante; i numeri romani delle ore, che risaltano sullo smalto azzurro, sono alternati a figure dei tarocchi. La parte centrale, a forma di ventaglio, presenta i dodici mesi dell'anno con figure femminili intente in rituali e lavori tipici, che circondano la costellazione dell'Orsa Maggiore. Nella parte superiore è raffigurato al centro il Carro del Sole e intorno i segni dello zodiaco. Riconoscibili ai lati le due figure dell'Annunciazione: a sinistra l'Arcangelo Gabriele e a destra la Vergine Maria; in alto, infine lo stemma della Terra d'Otranto con il delfino, il sole, la mezzaluna, i rami di olivo e di melograno. Rappresenta un'opera d'arte di gusto barocco in cui si fondono sacro e profano, la quale si inserisce elegantemente nell'architettura urbana del centro storico. It was built in 1955 by the Lecce sculptor Francesco Barbieri in cast bronze and enamelled copper. It is made up of a cyclopean eye in which the iris represents the quadrant; the Roman numerals of the hours, which stand out on the blue enamel, alternate with figures from the tarot cards. The central part, in the shape of a fan, presents the twelve months of the year with female figures intent on rituals and typical works, which surround the constellation of the Great Bear. In the upper part the chariot of the sun is depicted in the center and the signs of the zodiac around it. The two figures of the Annunciation can be recognized on the sides: on the left the Archangel Gabriel and on the right the Virgin Mary; at the top, finally, the coat of arms of the Terra d'Otranto with the dolphin, the sun, the crescent, the olive and pomegranate branches. It represents a Baroque work of art in which the sacred and the profane blend, which elegantly fits into the urban architecture of the historic center.

It was commissioned to be the largest clock in the world and took over 1300 working days back in 1955 to finish. This large bronze clock is enameled with copper and weighs up to 20kg and measures about 10m long. Pretty cool right?
