★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Domenico Martuscelli (1834-1917) riuscì a far istituire nel 1873 la prima scuola pubblica per ciechi in Italia raggiungendo successivamente altri grandi risultati, come la possibilità nel 1886 di far frequentare ai ciechi tutte le scuole pubbliche del regno e dal 1912 anche la possibilità dell'insegnamento della musica ai non vedenti. Il suo busto fu scolpito nel 1922 da Luigi De Luca (1857-1938).
Domenico Martuscelli (1834-1917) succeeded in establishing in 1873 the first public school for the blind in Italy, subsequently achieving other great results, such as the possibility in 1886 to let the blind attend all public schools in the kingdom and from 1912 also the possibility of teaching music to the blind. His bust was sculpted in 1922 by Luigi De Luca (1857-1938).

Domenico Martuscelli era un uomo dal cuore grande. Una vita dedicata ai più deboli fu il primo ad istituire una scuola per i ciechi. Nato nel 1873 come Istituto Principe di Napoli, oggi il centro di istruzione per non vedenti è intitolato al suo fondatore, Domenico Martuscelli, uno dei primi ad interessarsi dell’insegnamento della scrittura ai ciechi, e rappresenta – da questo punto di vista – un importante punto di riferimento per l’intero Sud Italia.
The monument is located on a small grass area in the square and honors Domenico Martuscelli who founded a school for the blind in Naples in 1873. Domenico Martuscelli was a man with a big heart. A life dedicated to the weakest was the first to establish a school for the blind. Born in 1873 as the Istituto Principe di Napoli, today the educational center for the blind is named after its founder, Domenico Martuscelli, one of the first to take an interest in the teaching of writing to the blind, and represents - from this point of view - an important reference point for the whole of Southern Italy.
