Il disegno del basamento in pietra si deve all' artista Pelagio Palagi (Bologna 1775-1860). Inizialmente il monumento ha subito modifiche sostanziali, seguendo le modifiche della Piazza, nelle foto d'epoca la si vede circondata da un'imponente aiuola per dare l'impressione che il cavallo si trovasse in mezzo ai campi. Tutto fu ridimensionato quando ci fu la necessità di renderla parcheggio libero, finchè, fortunatamente, ritornò ad essere la Piazza Principale della cittadina, divenendo Zona a Traffico Limitato, quindi pedonale. Con la ristrutturazione del 2013 perse non solo i lampioni in linea con la storicità della piazza, ma la mescolanza dello stile moderno dei nuovi lampioni e delle panchine in pietra e l'assenza di verde pubblico rimane solo luogo di incontro nei vari bar che la circondano, e sede per ogni manifestazione pubblica, dal mercatino al comizio a teatro all'aperto per gli eventi più di rilievo.
