Nel 1957 si trasferisce nei locali di via A. d’Isernia, diventando così il secondo liceo scientifico napoletano, e viene intitolato a Giuseppe Mercalli, sismologo e vulcanologo di fama mondiale, autore della scala per la misurazione dell'intensità dei terremoti, ancora oggi in uso, e di uno schema di classificazione delle eruzioni vulcaniche. Rapidamente, il “Mercalli” diventa punto di riferimento privilegiato per la formazione culturale delle giovani generazioni: sui suoi banchi crescono studenti che si affermeranno nella classe dirigente, nel mondo universitario, nelle professioni, nelle arti. Oggi come allora il Liceo Mercalli accanto alla riconosciuta serietà didattica, offre uno sguardo sempre attento all’evoluzione della società, alle problematiche del territorio e giovanili, integrando il proprio ruolo istituzionale con la necessaria interpretazione critica del mondo contemporaneo.
