An extraordinary spectacle of nature, it is a small lake of sulphurous origin in the Ansanto valley that has a thousand-year history. It is already mentioned by Virgil, who told of its "powerful force that leads to an eternal sleep". In a picnic area with benches and seats, there is the telescope for a close view of the bubbling water. The sulphurous smell is not pleasant but it is such a particular place that it is definitely worth visiting.

The place is easily accessible with Google Maps, has a parking lot, explanatory signs, binoculars to look closely, all free, even tables and benches to stop for a while. Going down to admire the lake up close can be dangerous if the day is not well ventilated, the presence of decaying animals may not be appreciated by many.

It is easy to reach, but despite being well signposted, not all the signs are visible and well preserved, so I still recommend the navigator to get there. After leaving the car, take a very short walk that leads to a panoramic point on the lake, from here you can have a suggestive overview of the valley and the springs. Some information panels, unfortunately not all still standing, will explain the findings of artifacts found on site that testify to the interest that man has had since ancient times for this site. For the curious and the daring, you can continue a little longer along the path until you get closer to the pools and closely observe the bubbling of the waters, not so much for the high temperatures, but for the vigorous release of gases, I recommend a lot of caution, both in walking the very short stretch of quite bumpy path, both above all for the fumes and the strong concentrations of carbon dioxide, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid that tend to stratify at the bottom (do not bring your 4-legged friends with you). A strong smell of sulfur will obviously be your faithful companion who will not leave you for the whole visit, but this place is absolutely worth a visit!

A 5 minutes sight with a sulfur smell. But be aware, it could be toxic if you stay for too long

MUST SEE. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THIS. It's plenty of sulfur. Some days is difficult to breath. Ask the local people when is better to come. It depends of what side wind is arriving. You can see many die animals, that's why you NEVER can approach more than allowed distance

There is only a word that can describe what the Mefite is: magic! A great and recommended day out, no regrets. You will find new friends too, ask for the Osco Rabel and its friends Benito and Elisa. It is a leap in the past, history, art and traditions with a contact with nature at it's best. Check out on Facebook/YouTube searching for "Mefite" or "Osco Rabel", contact the local volunteers to book exclusive excursions and taste local food. The Mefite will capture you!

A DEADLY PLACE!! You have been warned... It's an unique place yet LETHAL because of its own nature. This particular place have some of the rarest natural phenomenon of terrestrial surface. The underground movements of the terrestrial crust brought to this place the sulfuric acid exaltation along with carbon dioxide from the deepest spots of the planet makes the place around the "boiling" surface deadly. Along the history many cases of people died and animals due to the exaltations. The famous Virgilio described it as the "hell's mouth" due to the deadly history of the place and the bubbling sound produced by the ground. In the center you can see two big pounds where this gray water is boiling. The bubbles are full of gasses like sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide. The area around is full of sulfur minerals along with some minors like calcite. I highly suggest to not cross the line. Be safe amd enjoy the phenomenon from the distance. Don't be a fool or you can die
