Dopo anni dalla sua dipartita alcuni monaci rinvennero casualmente in una parete della grotta uno scrigno con un suo manoscritto nel quale li istruiva in alcuni esercizi ginnici adatti a rinforzare i loro corpi. I monaci ne ricevettero grande beneficio e svilupparono in seguito un'arte marziale grazie alla quale poterono difendersi dai briganti e dalle belve feroci. Bodhidharma is said to have gained enlightenment after nine years of meditation in a cave at Shaolin monastery. After years of his departure some monks accidentally found in a wall of the cave a casket with a manuscript in which he instructed them in some gymnastic exercises suitable for strengthening their bodies. The monks received great benefit from it and later developed a martial art thanks to which they could defend themselves against brigands and wild beasts.
