R	Roberto Pirotta on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Spettacolare costruzione medievale rimaneggiata da Lorenzo il Magnifico, situata strategicamente sull'altura più elevata della città, dominante tutte le vallate circostanti. Purtroppo già da qualche tempo l'accesso è riservato a un pubblico molto selezionato, ragione per la quale, non volendo arrendermi a questa limitazione, ho dovuto farmi arrestare con un pretesto improvvisato al momento (tentativo di furto di autoradio ai danni di un Fiorino delle Poste): la Fortezza è infatti adibita a Casa Circondariale! Trattamento nella media, locheshion superlativa, cibi assolutamente da rivedere: nel cuore della Toscana, con millenni di cultura culinaria sulle spalle, assolutamente inaccettabile!!! Alla fine, metto quattro stelle sia per la cucina, che per il comportamento del personale: dopo qualche giorno di permanenza, ho comunicato alla reception la mia partenza, ma il personale ha insistito (con le buone e con le cattive) affinché io rimanessi ancora qualche mese. Molto, molto sgradevole! Senz'altro non ci tornerò!!! Unfortunately, for some time now, access has been reserved for a very select audience, which is why, not wanting to surrender to this limitation, I had to be arrested on an improvised pretext at the moment (attempted theft of a car radio against a Fiorino delle Poste): the fortress is in fact used as a prison! Average treatment, superlative locheshion, foods absolutely to be reviewed: in the heart of Tuscany, with millennia of culinary culture on its shoulders, absolutely unacceptable !!! In the end, I put four stars both for the kitchen and for the behavior of the staff: after a few days of stay, I communicated my departure to the reception, but the staff insisted (by hook and by crook) that I still stay few months. Very, very unpleasant! Definitely will not go back !!!

La fortezza, dopo la conquista fiorentina, è servita più a tenere sotto controllo la città di Volterra che per scopi difensivi. Oggi, la fortezza è adibita a carcere e non è visitabile. Give the 4 stars for the splendid structure, formed by 2 castles, one of 1348 and the other of 1472, joined by 2 strong curtain walls. The fortress, after the Florentine conquest, served more to keep the city of Volterra under control than for defensive purposes. Today, the fortress is used as a prison and cannot be visited.

A	Alessio Martellotti on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La struttura si compone di due corpi uniti tra loro da alte mura difensive: la Rocca Vecchia, detta anche Cassero, fatta edificare nel 1342 dal duca d'Atene Gualtieri VI di Brienne governatore di Firenze e la Rocca Nuova detta Il Mastio, costruita per volere di Lorenzo il Magnifico tra il 1472 e il 1474. L'origine dell'ammodernamento della vecchia fortezza e della costruzione della nuova si deve alla scoperta delle miniere di allume in territorio volterrano e nella sanguinosa guerra che ne conseguì tra le città di Volterra e Firenze, per il loro controllo e sfruttamento: per la città etrusca fu uno degli episodi più devastanti della sua storia. L'atto finale fu l'assedio condotto da Federico da Montefeltro, al soldo di Lorenzo de Medici, il quale espugnò e mise a sacco la città nel 1472: da questo momento in poi Volterra fu integrata nello stato fiorentino e la sua sottomissione fu totale. In poco più di un anno la Rocca Nuova venne costruita distruggendo due interi quartieri e il Palazzo del Vescovo. La Fortezza Medicea domina poderosa su Volterra e ti accoglie con la sua massiccia torre del Mastio in corrispondenza dell’ingresso alla città da Porta a Selci. Oggi la struttura è usata come prigione di stato di media sicurezza, non accessibile e non visitabile, se non in particolarissimi giorni non ricorrenti ed in sezioni molto limitate.
