We watched Paul Hollywood City Breaks Palermo Sicily and were keen to go to Forneria Messina in Monreale, just outside Palermo. We drove and Google Maps sent us up a really bad road that seemed to be a shortcut up the mountain but, if you drive stick to Via Regione Siciliana all the way up. The bakery is also a restaurant in the evening but we wanted to try the bread since Paul Hollywood thought it was really good so we went at lunchtime. We ordered a sourdough rotunda bread loaf (big round one) and a Sfincione - a thick, square pizza eaten during the day, usually topped with tomato, onion, anchovies and cheese. The Sfincione was fantastic, the focaccia base was the softest we tried and the topping was very flavourful. The anchovies had melted into the tomato base to create a unique umami flavour. The sourdough bread that Paul Hollywood recommended was a let down. He said it smelled of toast but actually smelled of sesame, from the seeds scattered on top. It did have a thick crunchy crust but the inside left me confused...firstly it's yellow which didn't detract from the bread itself, it was just a surprise. Secondly there was no typical sourdough smell. Thirdly, the inside of the bread was more of a sponge cake than bread. This wasn't a sourdough bread as I know it but I would recommend a trip up to Monreale for the views and the cathedral. And, although the bread wasn't what Paul built it up to be it's worth the trip for the Sfincione

A lovely restaurant - friendly staff and great prices. The porchetta buns were one of the tastiest things we’d ever eaten and the staff went out of their way to assist us and give us the perfect dining experience.
