La leggenda narra che questa fonte fu fatta scaturire dal terreno dal martire Proculo di passaggio da Prato per sfuggire alle persecuzioni.
Per questo motivo all'acqua vennero attribuite proprietà miracolose e la fonte divenne meta del pellegrinaggio di malati in cerca di guarigione.
