β β β β β Trains are a bit cramped (even in 1st class) and often full but the scenery compensates for everything. And you can reserve seats to be sure although we did not.

β β β β β The trip is being slightly oversold. No doubt the scenery is amazing, but you are lucky to get one good picture. The panoramic windows are not much help when they are dirty and reflective. Also the tourist agency couldnt stop talking about how amazing, charming and full of life Domodossola is, but the departure they advertise lands you in the middle of siesta where everything is closed and you basically find yourself wandering the streets of a terribly noisy and trafficated ghost town with little to do, but wait for the long trip back to Locarno. Clean and non-reflective windows, along with a few highlighted stops fx. at a bridge or water, could make this trip attractive for tourists indeed. As it is now, it is just a beautiful transport from A to B that should never cost anywhere near 25 Euros.

β β β β β Great scenic experience! It can be a day excursion from Milan, but check first that it's going to be sunny!

β β β β β The Domodossola-Locarno railway, informally called Vigezzina in Italy and Centovallina in Switzerland, is an international narrow-gauge railway line that connects Domodossola with Locarno.
The construction of the railway, begun in 1913 by the engineer Giacomo Sutter, after various misfortunes gained momentum following the Convention signed on 12 November 1918 in Rome between the plenipotentiaries Sidney Sonnino and De Segesser, respectively, of the King of Italy and the Federal Council of the Swiss Confederation. Born from an initiative mainly due to the then mayor of Locarno Francesco Balli, the Domodossola-Locarno railway entered service on November 25, 1923, using the works of the Locarno-Bignasco Railway and the Locarno trams that had the same gauge for the first section. reduced. Since then he has carried out the task of local connection for which it was designed regularly. Not even in the difficult period of the partisan republic of Val d'Ossola did it interrupt its important function of connection and continued to carry it out even during the period of mass motorization, when the train seemed to remain the only folkloristic function; the period during which, on November 28, 1965, the Ponte Brolla-Bignasco section of the Vallemaggia railway was suppressed and replaced with a bus service.
In 1978 the railway line had to face and overcome serious difficulties due to a disastrous flood. The route, especially the one in Italian territory, had been devastated in the infrastructures, but this, instead of marking the beginning of the end as happened for other railways, instead laid the foundations for further improving and defining better safety criteria to maintain the connection service offered from the train.
The railway line, in fact, carries out a precise and essential economic function as well as tourism given that it actually creates the shortest and most panoramic conjunction between the great European railways of the Sempione on one side, and of the San Gottardo on the other, and it is currently the fastest connection between the Canton of Valais and the Canton Ticino, with transit in Italy.

β β β β β I took a train from Domodossola to Locarno and even though it was a bit cloudy I really enjoyed the two hours of travel. Friendly staff and very nice scenery. I would recommend it to anybody staying in the Visp area. If you have Swiss Travel Pass it is covered!
