★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La ferrovia Asciano-Monte Antico è stata chiusa al traffico nel settembre 1994, perché considerata un "ramo secco". Aveva infatti un traffico viaggiatori troppo limitato per mantenere il servizio ordinario.
Attraversando la zona delle Crete Senesi e la vallata del fiume Orcia ai piedi del Monte Amiata, la linea si trova tuttavia in un territorio di particolare valore ambientale e paesaggistico, dove tra l'altro si produce un vino molto pregiato, il famoso Brunello e dove è stato istituito il Parco Artistico Naturale e Culturale della Val d'Orcia, oggi riconosciuto anche dall’UNESCO come Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità.
La Asciano-Monte Antico, dal 1996, con il supporto degli Enti Locali, è stata quindi riaperta in alcuni giorni festivi come "ferrovia turistica", sul modello dei molti esempi di questo tipo esistenti negli altri paesi europei e nel nord America.
 The Asciano-Monte Antico railway was closed to traffic in September 1994, because it was considered a "dry branch". In fact, it had too limited passenger traffic to maintain ordinary service.
Crossing the Crete Senesi area and the Orcia river valley at the foot of Mount Amiata, the line is nevertheless in an area of particular environmental and landscape value, where among other things a very fine wine is produced, the famous Brunello and where the Natural and Cultural Artistic Park of Val d'Orcia was established, now also recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
The Asciano-Monte Antico, since 1996, with the support of Local Authorities, has therefore been reopened on some holidays as a "tourist railway", on the model of the many examples of this type existing in other European countries and in North America.
