Historic hermitage set in the rock, the path to get to the hermitage is suitable for all ages and is not difficult. The view over the city is mind blowing. A must visit!

Hermitage built in the thirteenth century by Cistercian monks, then passed to the Sgariglia and donated in the twentieth century to the Municipality of Ascoli Piceno. Magical landscape surrounded by greenery, can be reached after a short path starting from the Pianoro di San Marco or from the Cemetery of Piagge. The Hermitage is currently closed to the public except on specific days but can still be admired from the outside through the vegetation or from a viewpoint on the far left.

The only reason to do this hike is if you are looking for a hard workout, which it is - extremely long, steep and technical (wear hiking boots!). You will definitely break a serious sweat. Unfortunately that's about the only good thing I found about it. It was ugly (freeway overpass, graffiti, rusted cars and corrugated metal fencing), very poorly marked (you will lose the trail multiple times and be barked at by multiple junkyard dogs). I cannot recommend this trail at all. Many better ways to spend a few hours.

The structure built into the rock is an amazing building, however be mindful of the following: Google gives the location a bit randomly, you need to find the start of one path going there, the path is steep (be careful, some holes in the ground) and in the middle of the forest with little signs, the path from the main road takes 20-30 minutes, at the moment (August 2019) the eremo Is CLOSED, you can get up the main rakp of stairs but not get into it and lastly, because of the vegetation, it is really difficult to get a glimpse, or a picture, of it.

Truly unique structure and building well worth a visit, also has a great view of Ascoli as a bonus. As mentioned in earlier reviews the building itself was closed and the paths are a bit rough. With that said we managed to hike down (stopping on top of the trail) with sneakers and regular clothes. However, don't go there if the ground is wet given that it will be very slippery. The hike down is roughly 25-30m.
