Travelers be careful, police will check you for drugs if you look like a foringner. Friendly but annoying.

Inter City train makes brief stop. Get down quickly to get stamp from Italy customs officer. Ask train conductor where to find Customs officer.

The last possible train stop for tax-free refund before crossing the borders of Italy into Switzerland. Validation of your Tax-Free form will be done electronically with effect of 1 Sep 18 onwards. So, all you need to do is to present your passport at the tax-free custom office (labelled on the door inside the train station). It’s fuss-free, but do make sure your train stops long enough for you to make that run and back onboard the train. Otherwise, just alight, chill at the bar in the station, and wait for the next connecting train. (: *and yes, I unfortunately didn’t make it back onto the same train in time.

This train station is a hit or miss. Sometimes up to one hour delay (train not moving just staying on the track), sometimes on time stopping & leaving. Many times I’ve been on trains passing by this station, with custom officers getting onboard to check passports and COVID vaccine certificates. However, on a Swiss-Italy train today, I showed my passport and Swiss resident ID. And then, I was the only person in my cabin to be picked to open my luggage. A custom officer went through my stuffs: he literally opened & reviewed my cosmetic bags, female hygiene pads, clothes, and such, using his non-sanitized bare hands which just touched more than x100 passengers’ passwords & IDs. Speaking of COVID safety measure, this practice was against hygiene standards. I asked him: why me, what did I do wrong, and what was he looking for. He didn’t answer but said “this is normal.” I felt uncomfortable and far from normal when he picked the only Asian person in the cabin, among all the white passengers. To me, this is covert racism. After the train left Domodossola, I complained to the conductor, who said the custom officers were looking for illegal drugs. While it was normal for the custom officers to randomly select a person from each cabin to open luggage, it did not seem normal to me that he picked on an Asian person among all the white passengers, in the assumption that the Asian passenger may have possessed illegal drugs. Maybe the only non-white person (me) did not seem normal to him, but that is exactly the meaning of racial discrimination.
