Gli ambienti sovrastanti, oggi quasi totalmente crollati, portano la data del 1645. Sulla parete di roccia contro cui è accostato l'altare si trovano affreschi di notevole importanza, scoperti nel 1965 durante una ricognizione effettuata dal gruppo di studiosi appartenenti al circolo La Scaletta. Negli affreschi presenti si può riconoscere una Madonna vestita di un mantello rosso, un San Nicola dal volto color ocra e un Bambino benedicente. Altri affreschi sono collocati su una parete concava di roccia, probabilmente l'originale abside della cripta. The environment consists of a simple rectangular nave covered by a humpback vault. The rooms above, now almost totally collapsed, bear the date of 1645. On the rock wall against which the altar is placed there are frescoes of considerable importance, discovered in 1965 during a survey carried out by the group of scholars belonging to the La Scaletta circle. In the present frescoes we can recognize a Madonna dressed in a red cloak, a Saint Nicholas with an ocher face and a blessing Child. Other frescoes are placed on a concave rock wall, probably the original apse of the crypt.

Ho letto che le terre del materano sono emerse nel giurassico e questo giustifica la numerosa presenza di fossili marini come piccole conchiglie sia nelle grotte che nelle costruzioni nei Sassi dopo. Assolutamente consigliato! Magical place where peace reigns. From the path it is possible to walk to the Murgia where you can enjoy views and see the ravines and various caves. I have read that the lands of Matera emerged in the Jurassic and this justifies the numerous presence of marine fossils such as small shells both in the caves and in the constructions in the Sassi afterwards. Absolutely recommended!

All'esterno si gode della visuale paesaggistica della gravina di Matera. A small sanctuary that hides a much more beautiful treasure to the right of the main altar, from where you enter the ancient church, refectory and pilgrims' kitchen, a cellar dating back to the first centuries of the last millennium. Outside you can enjoy the landscape view of the ravine of Matera.
