Incendiatasi a fine ottocento, crolló nel terremoto del 1908, a parte le absidi che invece resistettero. Verranno smontate e immesse nella nuova chiesa costruita dopo il sisma nella stessa forma dell'originale. La vista delle absidi è riscontrabile in un dettaglio del dipinto della Pietà Correr di Antonello da Messina, oggi al museo Correr di Venezia. Bellissima la luminosità nelle mattinate, con il sole che penetra tra le vetrate absidali. The second largest church in Messina.
