Historic Cathedral of Castellammare di Stabia that beyond its beauty, inside a specially set up hall you can admire a historic nativity scene with original Neapolitan shepherds from the 18th century.

With its three arches and decorated with marble, the co-cathedral is a Latin Cross Basilica. 5 chapels, gray and white marble floor and the ancient sepulcher of the Stabian priests are part of it. Decorated stuccoes, columns made of piperno, and gilded medallions are part of the internal structure. In some friezes, psalms are read. Also present is the marble baptistery with the presence of a canvas depicting St. Peter delivering the keys. A special attention to San Catello, built in 1789, preceded by two bronze plaques commemorating the eruption of Vesuvius in 1906. The central altar, there is the statue of San Catello who gave us the grace and in bronze and marble, while under the table is placed the sarvovavo of paleochristian origin, dating back to the third century, which depicts the good shepherd.

"On the 22nd of November 1587 Ludovico Mayorano, episcopus Castelli maris, threw the first stone at the Piscopate building of the Cita de Castel ad mare ut supra", with these words - which are preserved in one of the registers belonging to the historical archive of Cathedral - a testimony is left relating to the laying of the first stone of the Church which is located in Piazza Giovanni XXIII. The Cathedral of Santissima Maria Assunta and San Catello is the main church of Castellammare di Stabia, also co-cathedral of the archdiocese of Sorrento-Castellammare di Stabia. The structure was put into operation starting from 1587, but was consecrated after years away, in 1893.

You aren't really meant to go here. When we went to Castellammare it was an amazing experience, probably the poorest place we have seen in Western Europe. But the people were friendly and the cathedral is astonishing, an almost completely unspoiled early Renaissance masterpiece. An absolute gem of a place.

This was a bonus stop without planning it and it was well worth it. I felt like a got a smaller version of St. Peter’s for free. It’s really well up kept and has a ton of postage as well as a mass hall where they still hold service. The front doors are pretty astounding for the scales and amount of detail. This is a short train ride from Naples for $7-10 round trip, make sure to add to your list.
