Il vecchio centro dentro le mura mantiene l'aspetto tipico di un borgo medioevale, costruito su uno sperone di pietra tufacea, che è servita anche per l'edificazione delle case. Tutto l'abitato conserva una patina di originalità e di autenticità ammirevole. This is a fantastic place for natural placement and conservation of building structures. The old center inside the walls maintains the typical appearance of a medieval village, built on a tuff stone spur, which also served for the construction of the houses. The entire village retains a patina of originality and admirable authenticity.

E’ situato a 285 metri sul livello del mare, costruito a strapiombo su una rupe di peperino. Il paese conta circa 4.400 abitanti detti vitorchianesi. Il santo patrono è San Michele. Il borgo è noto per l’attività di estrazione e la lavorazione del peperino. Un po’ di storia Il territorio di Vitorchiano fu abitato già nell’epoca del bronzo, successivamente fu occupato dagli etruschi e poi divenne un castrum romano. In epoca medioevale fu un importante centro fortificato, conteso a lungo tra Roma e Viterbo. I vitorchianesi si ribellarono alla città di Viterbo e chiesero la protezione a Roma che, nel 1201, lo dichiarò proprio feudo. Il paese rimase sempre fedele negli anni alla città di Roma e per questo motivo fu riconosciuta “Terra fedelissima all’Urbe” dal Senato Romano, le furono concesse ampie esenzioni fiscali e la possibilità di aggiungere al proprio stemma la scritta S.P.Q.R. Vitorchiano nella storia fu anche sede di una piccola comunità ebraica. Nel 1927, a seguito del riordino delle Circoscrizioni Provinciali, quando venne istituita la provincia di Viterbo, Vitorchiano passò dalla provincia di Roma a quella di Viterbo. Appena si passa la grande porta, ci si ritrova proprio nell’epoca medioevale, le stradine, le case , le viuzze e tutto l’ambiente sono rimasti fermi nel tempo, l’atmosfera è magica, surreale. Ho visto borghi svizzeri francesi molto meno belli "vendersi" così bene da richiamare turismo anche dall'estero. Ci vorrà tempo ma sono ottimista per i nostri nipoti. One of the many Italian countries with enormous untapped tourist potential. I have seen much less beautiful French villages "sell themselves" so well that it attracts tourism from abroad.
