G	Giuseppe Rivela on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bellissimo borgo , curato in tutti i particolari la cosa che mi ha colpito di piu' , l'ordine in tutti i sensi, cittadina molto pulita,persone molto cordiali ,che dire del castello, posto spettacolare e come immergersi nel passato e rivivere quei tempi , per la custode del castello ,una signora gentilissima molto preparata professionalmente,che dire di piu' ,vi consiglio vivamente di visitarlo non ve ne pentirete. G	Giorgio Peri on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Montalbano Elicona deve il suo nome al Mons Albanus, dove sorse il primo agglomerato urbano e la rocca di epoca romana, su questa si sovrapposero le successive fortificazioni d’impronta bizantina, araba e per finire normanna. L’appellativo Elicona risale senz’altro alla colonizzazione greca. L’abitato si è sviluppato appunto attorno al castello, in posizione dominante verso Nord, sulla costa tirrenica, difronte alle Isole Eolie. A Ovest si apre la catena dei Monti Nebrodi e a Sud si innalza l’Etna. Il borgo è suggestivo, le sue case sono costruite sulle pendici di questa altura, in un percorso in salita che giunge al maniero posto a 907 metri sul livello del mare. E’ un dedalo di viottoli dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato in un’epoca passata. Il castello è di proprietà comunale, oggi è in ottime condizioni, dopo aver subito lunghi lavori di restauro che lo rendono fruibile in tutti gli ambienti. Di recente istituzione il Museo delle armi e il centro per lo sviluppo del borgo medievale. Montalbano Elicona owes its name to Mons Albanus, where the first urban agglomeration and the Roman fortress were built. The town developed around the castle, in a dominant position towards the north, on the Tyrrhenian coast, facing the Aeolian Islands. Successivamente appartenne a diversi feudatari: a Matteo Palizzi nel 1350, a Vinciguerra d'Aragona nel 1359, ai De Sidot nel 1396, ai Romano Colonna, ai Bonanno nel 1587.
