Il paesaggio varia da moderne costruzioni a vecchi casolari con una campagna coltivata con ulivi o vigneti. Il comune si estende tra nord-ovest e Sud dell'Alpe di Catenaia, che ne è il rilievo montuoso più importante. I più vecchi ritrovamenti di insediamento umano risalgono tra 3.000 e 1.000 anni a.C. Sull'Alpe di Catenaia le tribù del tempo si concentravano sull'allevamento e sull'agricoltura. Conoscevano la ceramica, la tessitura, la lavorazione della pietra per l'utilizzo su frecce o coltelli. Le loro credenze religiose si concentravano sul dio sole. Il nome Subbiano potrebbe derivare dall'espressione latina "Sub Jano conditum" ovvero "Costruito al tempo di Giano". Secondo una versione più attendibile il nome sarebbe di derivazione latina, come del resto tutti i toponimi che terminano in -ano -ana che si sono formati dalla aggettivazione del nome del proprietario del fondo sul quale è sorto l'insediamento (cosiddetto nome prediale). Per Subbiano si ipotizza un toponimo costruito sul gentilizio romano Sevius (un centurione), poi corrotto in Suvius da cui vicus Suvianum e poi Subbiano. Allo stesso modo la località Valenzano, appartenente al Comune di Subbiano, deriverebbe dal nome proprio latino Valentius, da cui vicus Valentianum e poi Valenzano. Going up the Casentino valley, the first town on the left bank of the Arno is Subbiano, about 12 kilometers from Arezzo. The landscape varies from modern buildings to old farmhouses with a countryside cultivated with olive trees or vineyards. The municipality extends between the north-west and south of the Alpe di Catenaia, which is the most important mountain relief. For Subbiano it is assumed a toponym built on the Roman noble Sevius (a centurion), then corrupted into Suvius from which vicus Suvianum and then Subbiano. In the same way the Valenzano locality, belonging to the Municipality of Subbiano, derives from the Latin proper name Valentius, from which vicus Valentianum and then Valenzano.
